What is the gut? What is the gut in the human body?

The gut is also call as gastrointestinal (GI) tract or digestive tract or alimentary tract. It is a pathway from our mouth to the anus. It consists of a group of organs which includes the oesophagus, mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and rectumAccessory organs like the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver and gall bladder secretion help in the digestion of food.

The human GI tract is about 9 meters (30 feet). But in the living body it might be shorter because of movements like peristalsis. moves the food by contraction and relaxation of muscle throughout the digestive tract. The shape and the diameter of the tract are different from place to place to make the organ of the digestive tract.

What is gut health?

A healthy digestive system breaking down the food into nutrients, so that our body can absorb and use it. A healthy gut also contains healthy bacteria and immune cells. It can also communicate with the brain through nerves and hormones.

Sometimes we have problems that are often the result of an unhealthy diet and our lifestyle. Such as bloating, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If this is a chronic issue then needs medical attention.

What are gut bacteria?

Digestive system contains 1000 strains of bacteria. Also called microbiome, which is having different roles in maintaining gut health.

There are also bad bacterias, which are harmful to our body and if they are un treated they can lead to health problems.

How to improve gut health?

To maintain good gut health, we have to follow all the healthy habits that we do for our health. Staying healthy is relate to good gut health.

  1. Limiting the processed sugary foods, meat, and dairy product.
  2. Having a balanced diet according to our age and gender.
  3. Try to Consume a wide variety of seasonal fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. We get nutrients and fiber from these kind of diets which required to support the microbiota of gut.
  4. Take probiotics like yoghurt because it has good micro-organisms.
  5. Stay hydrated. Water also flushes away the toxins from the body.
  6. Get enough sleep
  7. Exercise as possible. Physical activities and meditation help in reducing stress which harms the gut microbiome.
  8. Consult the healthcare provider, before taking any kind of antibiotic.
