Overview

Hair loss (alopecia) can affect your scalp or entire body, and it could be permanent or temporary. There are many reasons for hair loss. Like hormonal changes, heredity, aging, medical conditions and certain medication. More mens are effect by hair loss then women.

Hair loss can appear in many ways, depending on what it caused. It can happen slow or sudden.

Losing 100 hairs a day is normal. Due to new hair growing at the same time, it is not noticeable. But if new hair does not replace the hair that has fallen then the hair loss occurs.

  • Radiation therapy on the head. Because of radiation hair may not grow again as same as it was before.

  • Severe Stressful events. Overall thinning of hair after a emotional or physical shock. This is a temporary hair loss.

  • Hairstyles and extreme hair treatments. Traction Alopecia can cause due to Hairstyling or hairstyles that pull hair. Like cornrows or pigtails. Permanent or Hot-oil hair treatments also can cause hair fall. If it occurs scar then the hair loss could be permanent.

Risk Factors

Below are the factors that can increase the risk of hair fall, such as:

  • A family history of balding
  • Too much weight loss
  • Poor Nutrition
  • Aging
  • Chemical or strong product usage
  • Some medical conditions or medications, such as diabetes etc
  • Stress

Prevention

Genetic hair falls or baldness cannot be prevent.

These are a few tips that help to avoid preventable types of hair fall:

  • Be gentle while combing the hair. When the hair is wet comb or brush it. Do not tug while brushing and combing, use a wide-toothed comb.

  • Avoid harsh treatments such as curl irons, hot rollers, hot oil treatments and permanents. Minimise styles that use braids, rubber bands etc.

  • Avoid smoking. Some research shows baldness and smoking in men are relate.

  • Protect your hair from ultraviolet light.

  • Consult with your doctor about any supplements or medications might cause hair loss.

  • Ask the doctor for a cooling cap. If you are treating with chemotherapy. During chemotherapy this cooling cap can reduce the risk of losing hair.
